This sterilization technology based on plasma was patented in 1987 and produced commercially for the American markets in 1993. Plasma Sterilization uses very low temperature Hydrogen Peroxide gas plasma technology to sterilize surfaces, instruments and devices. The germicidal effects of plasma have been known for decades but it is only recently that we have begun to apply this technology to industry.
Plasma treatment is an intrinsically environmentally friendly process which can be used to functionalize the surface of textiles & fabric without altering the bulk properties of the material in any way.

Unacceptable packaging for use with ETO (e.g., foil, polyvinylchloride, and polyvinylidene chlorine [kitchen-type transparent wrap]) 814 or hydrogen peroxide gas plasma (e.g., linens and paper) should not be used to wrap medical items. In central processing, double wrapping can be done sequentially or nonsequentially (i.e., simultaneous wrapping).
May 23, 2020 · Reusable fabric masks should be cleaned and/or disinfected before each use to reduce risks associated with COVID-19 AND other potentially infectious microorganisms (e.g. bacteria, viruses, and fungi). Although the general principles of mask cleaning and disinfection are the same for most fabric …

Plasma sterilization was started in 1968 because of the need to ensure that instruments are properly cleaned to avoid infection. Where ethylene oxide is used to sterilize medical instruments, the cycle can take about 8 to 16 hours. If plasma is used however, the cycle will take about 45 to 75 minutes for both wrapped and dry instruments and devices. After this time the products will be ready for use.
The last method of low temperature sterilization for us to explore is the method of hydrogen peroxide plasma sterilization. As we explained in our posts on formaldehyde (LTSF) and ethylene oxide (EtO), not all medical and scientific equipment can be successfully sterilized in an autoclave, also known as a steam sterilizer.
